Why are 18 Wheelers and Commercial Trucks Dangerous?

18-wheelers, or semi-trucks, are responsible for bringing in nearly 68% of all goods sold around the country in any given year. That’s a lot of time on the road. Because of the mass delivery of goods, there are 3 million registered semi-trucks in the United States today.

Tractor trailer trucks are known for driving countless hours during the week, which oftentimes results in lack of awareness, mechanical failures and swerving from exhaustion. In the state of California alone, there were nearly 370 deaths due to trucking accidents in 2017 and many more that resulted in damages or injury. Other reasons 18-wheelers can be dangerous include:

  • Braking Ability: Due to their size, when a tractor trailer truck needs to brake, they usually start braking in advance of a perceived stopping point. If someone were to stop abruptly in front of a big rig, it hinders the truckers’ ability to stop.

  • Blind Spots: We’ve all heard it… never pass a trucker on their right side. 18-wheelers have blind spots on the right side of their truck when another vehicle is approaching. If the trucker doesn’t see that vehicle and switches lanes, it could cause a serious accident.

  • Cargo: Some trucks are filled with dangerous materials, which could cause serious accidents if a collision occurred.

These are all preventable accidents if all drivers shared the rules of the road and drove carefully, however, there are accidents that happen that can also be due to the fault of the driver (or mechanic!) due to negligence. These accidents include:

  • Drive Fatigue or Exhaustion
  • Speeding
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Poor Truck Maintenance or Defective Parts
  • Lack of Directionals
  • Poor Training / Trucking School
  • Truckers Following too Closely

Who is Responsible?

Since trucking accidents can also occur due to another vehicle (not the truck driver) not following the rules of the road, the party responsible for any accident is the party who caused the collision.
